Normal Site Downtime / Internet Hosts

I don't know how many of you guys are involved with web design of have any knowledge of it, but I am getting pretty irritated at our ISP, 1and1. We have downtime quite often - I never noticed it before, but now I recently setup an automated e-mail if the site goes down, and this is down #2 in 4 days. The first one was last Saturday from 10pm thru 4 am. 6 hours!! Thank god it happened at night and none of our clients noticed... I thought downtime on a shared server normally happened for like 2 minutes once a month or something. Now, my sites are all down again.
Anyone know what is "normal" and what I should expect? Would switching to a dedicated server make a difference? Anyone have a (cost effective) ISP they recommend? I like 1and1, but the downtime just isn't acceptable. We just finished one site that is a full-on e-commerce site and if his site goes down, that costs some serious $$.
Thanks
Nick
