A really nice SPORT touring rig. On my short list of bikes (currently riding an R1...). Better handler than an ST1300, more comfortable than a VFR. Lots of tourquey, smooth power. Luggage is very well intergated into the package, and Yamaha has really picked up the fit and finish over the last few years. I put them razor-close to Honda, if not on equal footing. the FJR is somewhat of a unique bike in the marklet right now; enough sport to embarass punks on sport bikes if you know what your doing, but you can put a ton of miles on and not feal like you got the crap kicked out of you the next day.

The heat issues have supposedly been adressed with some re-plumbing of the airflow and baffles beneath the fairings. There are some owners that clammor for a 6th gear for cruising, but if you ride the twisty roads its not an issue.

The only thing I don't like the bike is the way Yamaha sells it; you can't just walk into the dealership and buy one (typically). They have a Preferred Delivery Program, which means that you put a deposit down on the bike at some point durring the off season, and the dealer puts your name into the queue. you get it when you get it. Some wait longer than others. Sometimes you can stumble across one that someone bailed on, or an unscrupulous dealer that faked an order to get one on the floor.

Either way, expect to pay near list for a new model. Used FJR's are finally starting to turn up in numbers, and if you can deal with the heat (it doesn't bother some people) its not a bad way to go. Get the extended warranty if you can; valve ticking has been reported enough times that its not just coincidence.

Important question: How long have you been riding? An FJR would NOT be a good choice for a first bike.
