OT: HD or 3 chip camcoder?

I watch lots of video of high school football. I was struck by the obvious quality of some video taken by another school with a Canon XL2; clear, well illuminated, smooth motion, natural color.Even when transfered to VHS tape it was obviously superior to the usual games done with a good consumer one-chip camcorder (Canon Optura). We may consider such a device, but new High Def (one chip) camcorders are now available for about the same price.
Does anyone have experience or insight on the better way to go for excellent sports video?
Thanks.
