You may want to re-visit your son's 2005-2006 FAFSA. Misunderstnading the questions slightly (such as including your 401(k) balance on the line for investments) can result in a EFC (Expected Family Contribution) number which is far too high.
Assuming that you have already done this, and your son still doesn't qualify for Federal Aid, your sources for loans are the typical sources , i.e. local banks, savings & loans, Credit Unions, GMAC, Citi-Bank, etc. You/he can borrow from them as Student Loans, you just won't get the advantage of Government Subsidized or controlled interest rates and re-payment options.
The Financial Aid Office at your son's school should have information on loan sources outside the Government Assisted programs.
