Stop signs here are mostly used to slow down traffic in residential areas, and to discourage people from using those streets as through routes. I think speed bumps would work better, in combination with yield signs where needed. What you also often see in Europe is that the lay-out of the street with parking places, planters, trees, shrubs, etc requires some level of zig-zagging, so you can't even drive fast.

All way stop intersections are uniquely found in the US. They rely heavily on the somewhat laid-back driving style here in the US. I don't think it would work in Europe, because people tend to drive a little more assertively (just visited Naples, Italy last month; surely wouldn't work there!). Besides, the whole concept is unknown, so introducing it wouldn't be an option. Kinda like traffic circles here: we have a few in the area, but people are at a loss of how to cross them.

All way stops work kinda OK, but it breaks when there's more than a little bit of traffic, because it won't always be clear who was at the stop line first. Especially if there are multiple lanes. This defeats the whole purpose, because if there's just a little bit of traffic a normal yield will do.

Also what irritates me is when there are 'some way' or 'almost all way' stop intersections. Unless you are familiar with the place, how are you supposed to know which roads have a stop sign and which don't? If you're lucky you may be able to recognize stop signs on the other roads from the back, but you can't always when there are buildings or trees in the way.

Even the 2-way stops, where you cross a main road. If two cars approach the stop signs on opposite sides, and one of the cars wants to turn left on the main road, in Europe there's no first-in-first-out rule, so the turning car always has to yield. This took me some getting used to.

The problem with yield signs around here is that they are so rare that people either treat them as a stop, or ignore them completely.
