Curtain air bags are not some magical thing that is automatically superior. It's just one form of side head protection. The 9-5 does indeed have side head protecting air bags that work just as well as curtain airbags. It's just two different types of side head protection, with the curtain airbags having been hyped with commercials etc.
The 9-5 gets maximum points for side impact performance for the 2 front seats in the EURONCAP crashtests. The only thing that is missing is side airbags for the rear seat.
Finally, airbags are not as important as structual integrity and I can assure you that if I had to pick car to crash in, it would be a 9-5 over any of the other manufacturers any time. It's not a coincidence that it's been shown to be the safest car in Sweden several years in a row based on large scale statistics of real accidents. And that's over even Volvo. Audi et al aren't even close.
The curtain airbag thing is mostly a publicity problem rather than a real safety issue with the 9-5.
