I guess I can see how people who are image conscious might not want to look like they are driving a hatchback if the only option is the small car-econo-box/hatchback look (Golf-Civic, etc). But when you look at a 9000, or the Mazda6 hatch, neither of which look like hatchbacks and have excellent performance, comfort, etc., I don't see why more people don't like them. They are really the best of both sedans and wagons.
I love going to places like Home Depot and seeing people struggling to put large items into the trunks of their Acura/Accord/Camry/Taurus, etc. I come out with a load bigger than theirs, pop the hatch, drop the seats, load up and drive away. And they are still strugging.
I would buy a 9-5 wagon, but I'm not so sure I'd buy the sedan. Have had hatches for so long that I'd feel deprived without one.
