I have been to ABJ several times with my 98 Saab 9000 and it hasnt been impressive at all. I have had many mechanics and although Al at ABJ seems like a really nice guy - he is disorganized, too busy to remember me (even after five visits in a year and $2000 in repairs) and perhaps not as sharp as he once was. Its vital that you go in there with a piece of paper explaining what you need or you are likely to get mixed results. While sitting in his "office" (if you could call it that) I often get the sense that the vehicles are shuffled around between mechanics (many that dont speak English) and lots of stuff slips through the cracks. I can NEVER talk to the guy who looked at my car and hear directly what they found or did - its always through Al - so I get some brief report. Its pretty much like taking it to the dealer.
I brought my car in for a new air temp sensor and belt replacement. The ACC temp was not being regulated and the belt had been reccomended for change by him in the past. He called to say I need a new heater blower. the fan blowed air just fine - but the temp of the air isnt right. I agreed to the work. I was shocked when the new heater blower was $500 - something I thought he should've told me. Also they left a mess of foam pieces all over the floor of the car. When I picked up the car they said "Oh no you dont need a new belt, it looks fine. I was confused because he told me a year ago that the belt would need changing soon. Then this week (a month later) my belt began slipping off a pully during a road trip (a huge headache) and I called Al about it and he said "I told you to get that belt serviced, you can never service those pullys enough". If he wasnt a nice old man I probably would've screamed at him. Sure good prices, nice policies, but I am lookin for a new mechanic in Boston.
Also Al doesnt work with "appointments" or any kind of expectations as to when the car would be done. I call all the time to arrange service and he cant promise when he will look at it or when it will be done. I cant work that way! I need my car.
