Five states in the US don’t allow new diesel vehicle registrations for vehicles under a certain weight. I think the NY regulations state the vehicle must have over 7000 miles to be considered used. This made me wonder if you could buy a new one and have the dealer advance the odometer by 7K. I think odometer fraud only applies to rolling back and most cars electric odometers can easily be advanced. One could also shop out of state and take a long road trip with the transporter tags. A VW dealer in NY said that the diesels are fetching a least $1K over sticker (in surrounding states) and that they are almost impossible to get a hold of. A large dealer mark up on top of an already higher cost for a diesel might make diesel uneconomical, unless you use biodiesel, which I would hesitate to do in a brand new car.
If GM was on the ball, it would get diesel Saabs and next generation SUV/trucks on the road that could officially use both diesel and biodiesel (separate tanks) and have a hybrid option in conjunction with the dual fuel diesel for even better efficiency and power. Would a diesel hybrid have too much low end torque? I guess there could be some work around for this.
Right now to get a Saab diesel you have to buy it in Europe, ship it here, and convert it to meet DOT requirements. I don’t know what this adds to the cost, but I doubt it makes all that much economic sense, especially if you are in one of the 45 states where you can buy a new VW or MB diesel.
Diesel fuel is quite expensive in some parts of the country. It is often more than premium gasoline and is not available at most gas stations.
