laser printing drums/multifunction recommendation

Why do some laser printers/copiers have drums and others do not. I have always thought that a separate drum makes the unit costs higher since the drum is expensive to replace. It can also be hard to find and wear out when you need it most. Are drumless machines actually the same cost per page as those with drums since they have a drum/toner combo that costs more each time you buy a toner cartridge?
Anyone have a recommendation for a multifunction laser with a flatbed copier? I have a HP one from before they had flatbed machines and a canon copier. Both are slowly having little problems so I am considering a replacement. I fixed a little problem with the HP, but the canon sheet feeder has a bad sensor. I am inclined toward the new HP ones since overall my HP printers have been fantastic. HP is/was the king of laser printers. I do think the new ones are getting flimsier and flimsier so this may change. My HP makes clearer copies than the canon. I guess the imaging technology is better.
