I am a total magazine junky. I always dig Automobile, though it's a thin read. Hardly more than an hour, cover to cover. Autoweek is great too, and very readable on-line. There are SO many ads, that it's preferable to me to skip the print version. R&T has too much 'track' for me, and Car and Driver is a total right wing freak out, though they do employ a transexual cartoonist.. which is pretty interesting and laudable. The cartoons are FANTASTIC, btw.
If you're really going to go for the BEST though, the any of the British mags are supreme. Amazing photography, talon-sharp writing, and somehow they seem vastly more HONEST about bad cars. You get the feeling with most of the American mags that they just won't say it when they don't like it, whereas in Autocar, Car or Top Gear, they are merciless! Not cheap, but any of them will give you at least 4 hours of reading time.
Have fun!
