Not sure where you are located, but I bet that if you are near a metropolitan area of any size, there is a used tool store near you. Here in the Capital District (Ny), there is a great used tool store in Schenectady that I use for sockets and wrenches. Craftsman, Snap-on and Mac are all available, for usually $.25 a socket for 3/8 drive. Occasionally, I find myself having to either weld a socket to a rounded bolt, or modify a socket (like for removing an ignition lock). Inexpensive replacements take the sting out of it.
Acceptable stuff can be had from Harbor Freight - they have a line that has a lifetime warrantee, and as such is maybe 80% of Craftsman quality for 60% of the price. If I'd known better I'd have just saved up and bought the good stuff first time around though.
