This always the trickiest question with an older but much loved car.
My (non-Saab) experience with coolant in the engine has not been good. One Subaru and one BMW, each diagnosed as having cracked cylinder head (actually the BMW may have had a cracked block, come to think of it).
It may be a gasket, but as you and other posters have noted, it's an expensive diagnosis either way. I wound up selling both cars, as the cost to fix would have been just about what the car was worth plus selling it for a loss. (ie, the Subie was worth about 2,500, fix would have been $1,400 plus, so I sold car for $1,000 and started again).
You are sort of taking a chance with a car that is worth $1,500 or so. If you guess wrong -- installing a used engine that fails or has other problems -- it's unlikely that you'll recover the cost. If you quit the car now, you might get $500 for it. OTOH, you know this car and any peripheral problems it might have. If the car was worth 10k, then the decision would be easier...
OTOH, seems like the car has been well maintained. It might be worth spending the money for a diagnosis, only if you trust your mechanic.
I have also swapped out a few engines/transmissions, and have had mixed success, frankly.
If you don't trust your mechanic, there are a lot of things that could go wrong.
