I'm jealous !
We just had Ahmad Jamal in town, and it was an INCREDIBLE show !!!!! I would love to see Jarrett, but I go back and forth on him some times. I agree that he's an incredibly gifted musician, but I've read his biography and based on that and his stage presence (and some interviews) he;s a bit of a jerk. Also, depending on the album/venue, his incessant screeching often ruins the moment for me. I count Tokyo 1996 and Whisper Not among his better live standards albums; the screeching is minimized and the performances are superb. although Deerhead Inn is inspired to be sure.
I rank him below Ahmad Jamal, McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson, and Chick Corea, but above Bill Evans and Brad Mehldau from a performance/talent perspective. Composing is a different matter, though.
