Those brands both have very good reputations. The plasma displays have better dark levels, while the LCDs tend to leak a blue light when the pixels are off. So for viewing dark scenes in a dark room, that can be a real problem for some. The LCDs have better resolution (more pixels) for the dollar. But 1080I and 1080P plasmas are just starting to come out, and can be very expensive. So those will be in the future for most folks who want that higher resolution. Go for the higher readily available res plasma if possible, they will look better, especially in a basement.
It is agreed that plasma has better picture quality (PQ) than LCD when comparing the same resolution. The best CRTs still have the best PQ. I have ordered a Sony 34" wide screen XBR CRT. This is big and heavy*, but is a very good HDTV. CRTs can also have a very good black level. Some LCDs are having contrast rations reported for full output VS the screen turned off. Those numbers can be very high an bogus as they ignore the light leakage problem.
Meanwhile, CRTs are rapidly loosing market share and CRT plants are closing. Sony has stopped making trinitron tubes in USA and will stop CRT TV production in the USA. (My CRT XBR is USA made). Expect to see fewer CRT models left to choose from, and the number if CRTs the high end may be competely gone, unless some production is shifted to China.
* at 192 pounds, no one will steal it ;)
