Depending on your soil types or rock, the pipes can be in horizontal trenches or in vertical bore holes. If there is plenty of ground water, one can use well water with a heat exchanger in the basement. The ground water is then returned to the water table via a different bore well pipe and that may be mandatory via local regulations.
If you use the well water solution, things are rather simple. With a heat exchange loop in trenches or bore holes, the circulating liquid may need to have freeze protection. This might be polypropylene glycol which is not toxic. A salt brine would also be non toxic. Regulations might forbid using anything toxic such as ethylene glycol.
So you will be bound by regulations, installer preferences, local soil conditions and available area. Certainly a lot to learn about.
Compare to a dual stage heat pump with a dual stage high efficiency furnace at 8 - 10K.
If you go with radiant heating, then do you you have to also install air ducts for air conditioning? That would appear to be paying for two systems. Central air duct systems also allow for air filtration and humidification.
You have an opprotunity to design a house that has less heat loss. Added insulation and better windows will pay off very well. You will have two large structures that may require their own HVAC. This also raises the ratio of the exernal surface ratio to sqare footage and that ratio gives a number that relates to the cost per square foot to heat-cool.
