I have just observed the very same thing. First, from experience auctions with actual pictures of the item up for bid (as opposed to stock/nophoto), obviously receive more bids. Second, seller feedback adds dollars to the resultant winning bid, people pay more to reduce risk and buy from a seller with good feeback.
That said, I was bidding on a pair of snowboarding bindings because my setup is so antiquated they laugh me out of tuning shops. I found an auction for a slightly used pair of Burton C60 bindings which retail for $349. New bindings have sold for anywhere from 280 to 310; however said item can be purchased at nationwide retailers "on sale" for $279. The opposing bidder kept bidding it up, right through, the usual price found in stores. Frustrated, I inquired as to why he kept bidding it up when said item can be purchased (new) for a lesser price. Turns out the bidder does not live in the united states and similar items are sold for *over* retail near where he lives. Location may also be a factor. Furthermore, I have struck deals with sellers in the past which will allow me to pick up the item from their house in lieu of shipping if I am the highest bidder.
