Our former neighbors had nearly identical situation.... years ago when their oldest was about 2, nearly 20 years ago. They found the hardest part was getting him to take the glasses off! The glasses improved his sight so tremendously that he could suddenly see things he couldn't see before.
They had the same concerns you have initially, but the glasses never left his face during daylight hours. He insisted they be removed only after he was in bed at night, and had to be put on again first thing in the morning.
Based on the family photos included with their Christmas cards over the years, I believe his eyes improved as he matured and he no longer needed glasses. His parents would not have opted for contact lenses or corrective vision surgery at the age he was no longer wearing glasses in the photos.
Good luck!
