I have always used the standard deduction method, but may switch in 2006.
Whatever you do, you need to keep records to prove your mileage. And remember (as my accountant points out) even going to Staples to buy ink or paper for your printer counts as business miles.
If you do actual costs you need records for all gas, oil, maintenance AND you need mileage data so you can show percentage of business use. Charging all your gas (or using a debit card) gives you a receipt, and you can write mileage and any biz trip info on the receipt. Actual costs may give an advantage if you have a big expense during the year, like a tranny, or even things like tires, exhaust, etc. But you can't always predict which is best until you have all the data. Some people vary it from year to year based on which works best at tax time.
FYI, I think the rate for most of 2005 was 40.5 cents/mile. I think Sept to Dec was 48.5 cents/mile due to higher gas prices.
