Sorry, but this is BS. Look at what BMW did with Rover. BMW bought Land Rover essentially just to get its all wheel drive engineering and the Mini rights, and then turned around and sold it to Ford at quite a substantial loss after they got what they wanted.

As others have stated, every business is for sale, you just have to name the right price. Look at what is left of the Rover group. Essentially it was parted out piece by piece to various companies, and what was of "real" value to insiders was the brand name(s) and engineering. I believe almost all of the manufacturing plants have been closed with the exception of the Land Rover plant that Ford owns. Modern automobile plants can be changed over to make different vehicles rather cost-effectively (vs acquiring plants and running them for low-volume models) so it can be done.

I think Lutz is just saying this so people stop calling for GM to sell off Saab. GM doesn't want to sell Saab because of all the $$$$ it has dumped into the brand, with frankly very little return. Saab is GM's premium nameplate in Europe, Cadillac in the US.

You need to be objective when it comes to these types of things, otherwise you'll run your business into the ground. As much as I like my Saab and the Saab brand in general, and as much as it hurts me to say this, as far as a business I wouldn't touch Saab with a thirty nine and a half foot pole.

Sometimes the truth hurts.
