...provided both parties go willingly and with a genuine interest in improving things.
While we didn't have "marriage" counciling exactly (we weren't married despite a long term relationship), I can say it turned around my relationship with my wife. The biggest part of it for me was learning to argue effectively and not bottle-up resentment. That combined with hearing our own stories about relationships and our personal history in a more structured setting put a LOT of things in perspective. I understood her anger with her family, she finally understood my reluctance to get married. Our relationship became a lot more dynamic as a result, but very few things come between us now.
More fighting after counciling might not make sense to a lot of people, but doing it effectively and keeping it "on-topic" turned out to be very important for us. We'll have been together 10 years this fall, no way we would have made it without our counseling. In fact we were still going to sessions when we got engaged... the counselor cried (happily) when we told her =)
Wish they had workplace counseling that worked as well..
