After WWII while Saab was looking at ways to divest its engineering and manufacturing facilities it was working on a jet fighter. This was the Saab J21R which was test flown in 1947 -- the same year Saab got into the car business. This was followed by the Saab 29 "Tunnen". It flew for the first time in September 1948. The Drakens and Viggens were also built during the time that Saab was part of the airplane company. Saab has a great aircraft heritage which includes prop and jet aircraft. Check the link.
