Most of the time the engine never gets to operating temperature, so you will be experiencing increased wear - keeping the oil fresh will help reduce engine wear.
Also, you are rarely getting the oil to temperature and keeping it there long enough to boil off any accumulated water. Even the 20 mile drive, if done at speed, is at best 20 minutes. Water doesn't boil off immediately - it takes time. The additional water sitting around forms some pretty nasty chemicals.
Given the potential sludging issues, I wouldn't go over 5K miles under ideal conditions. Yes, I know the recommended interval is 10K. That's what they said for the 9000. What you are doing is hard on both the oil and the engine. The best you can do is make sure the oil is as fresh as possible. What is more, it sounds like it may take quite a while (months) to reach even 3K miles. Given the stress you are putting the engine under, I would change the oil every three months, max, even if you don't have 3K miles yet.
Yes, that may seem like a lot of oil. But it's cheap compared to the cost of an engine. Just make sure you make the oil available to a recycler.
