The above post says that about 34,000 SAABs were sold in the first quarter, 24,000 of them in Europe. That leaves 10,000 sales in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, and smaller markets.
High sales figures in the US is good because it expands the US dealer network and results in a bigger aftermarket segment. Even mundane things, like oil, is better with a bigger market because otherwise stores would not stock already rarely found Mobil 1 0W40 or Castrol Syntec 0W30, one of the few oils available in the US that meet SAAB 9-3 specifications.
However, high US sales is bad because then quirky American tastes would pressure SAAB to built a car to meet those tastes. A purely American driven designed SAAB would be one with only automatic transmission available, no turbo, ACC only (oops, that's happened already in US market cars), 8 cupholders like some US designed cars, no hatchback (oh, that happened, too), no provisions to easily add fog lights, no inside handle for the trunk, optional side curtain airbags, etc. One former American trait that has been phased out is the previous American car design's liking to jagged metal on the sides of the trunk.
