It's easy to blame high prices on the big, bad oil companies and obscene executive profits, but that really doesn't explain the situation. The $40 million per year that the CEO of ExxonMobil takes in, averaged over say 100 million ExxonMobil customers in the country, is only costing each customer about 40 cents per year. Too much for one executive? Seems like it, but that's for the shareholders to decide. A significant factor in the cost of gasoline? Hardly. Average oil company profits are in line with other industries (about 10% of gross revenue).
The real reasons we are seeing high pump prices are a world shortage of oil (a finite natural resource), and to some extent, a shortage of refining capacity in the U.S.
