In the Chicago area, Citgo is one of the better-running gasolines in my SAABs, especially with regards to positive starts on the first crank, no dying (Mobil is the other one). No knocking problems, even when I run regular in my 9000 turbo (an increasingly rare event now that the 20-cent/gallon differential is somewhat insignificant!!!). I'm also happier sending my money to Sr. Chavez than some of his fellow OPEC conspirators.
Perhaps in your area the Citgo stations have taken over for some other brand/chain, with stations equipped with old leaking tanks - or perhaps they are just plain old. Many of the Marathon stations here seem to be ancient; I've had a couple of really bad tanks of gas from two very convenient stations, and I have never gone back to any of them. My brother had to have his company Taurus's fuel-injection system rebuilt after a steady diet of company-mandated BP regular (his mechanic said that this is not uncommon).
