I've done it a few times.
Car #1. Sold it 20 years ago and it was an old piece of junk then. The buyer was a guy at school. He paid $200 in cash and I signed over the title on the back.
Car #2. Neighbor bought my Saab with a cashier's check. I suppose you should look at it to make sure it's not a forgery. You might meet him at that bank or at your bank (think about which is better, maybe you could see her buy it 'cuz if it's forged and you deposit it at your bank, you still take the hit if it's later found out to be fake)
Car #3. Man responded to a newspaper ad. This happened about 2 years ago. In this day and age, I was a bit concerned about robbery and murder so I had a sort of bodyguard and met at the federal building parking lot, which is under video surveillance. He paid cash and drove away. ha, ha, I wonder if the feds mistakenly thought it was a terrorist payoff or drug deal. Wal Marts also video tape their parking lots.
Car #4. A family member sold the car on e-bay. I think they paid by paypal but maybe by check. When it was certain that the money was cleared, the relative delivered the car to a trucking company.
Bring title, ID for the bank, screwdriver to take off license plate (if that's what your state requires), clean out car, consider being a nice guy by washing the car, at least leaving half a tank of gas, and typing up a summary of when upcoming maintenance (like oil changes and spark plugs) need to be done. If you're worried about murder, check the buyer's ID and phone it in to someone at home or your own answering machine. Sorry about being paranoid but about 10 years ago, someone pretended to be a car buyer, murdered the seller, cut him up and ate him. sicko!
