I was pretty darned surprised to learn on a recent trip to Canada that they frequently use a different screw than is common in the US. It's called a Robertson screw, and features a square, tappered hole, which seems quite effective. I guess I have seen these bits in various driver sets I have owned, but never thought much of them.
Wikipedia has an interesting article on screws (link below) but it doesn't discuss how this difference between the US and Canada came about (or aboot, if you prefer :)
