First things first... CR historically doesn't like Saab (except when it comes to safety) so take their advice with a grain of salt. Especially with the newer 9-3 they've applied "first model year" problems to the entire line... not exactly a fair predictor for '04s and '05s

1. What are they known for? Utility, safety, design, performance, and a key between the seats. What do I like about mine? I can race around town, get good gas mileage on road trips, and still fit massive boxes in the back. I smile every time I drive my car... can't say the same for a lot of others.

2. Problems? The new 9-3 (from '03 on) appears to be a solidly reliable car, moreso than my older style 9-3.

3/4. Relaibility/Repair? It's not a Toyota, but Saabs also won't have all the bells and whistles that make BMW and Mercs so hard/expensive to fix. IMO they fall somewhere towards to the top of European brands. The big thing is making sure oil changes were done according to schedule... these cars are hard on oil because of the turbo.

5. With sensible driving you can expect well over 30mpg on the highway and somewhere in the low 20's around town (less if you race out of intersections like I do ;) ). Other folks comments about premium are spot on, there's also been evidence that thanks to the engine management 93 octane shows improved mileage (in addition to better performance) that can offset the cost increase.

6. Have fun shopping for a Saab, I'm jealous personally... wish I could do it more often.
