Don't underestimate the importance of using gutters to collect roof runoff, and equally as important, for downspouts to move the water away from your foundation.
We moved into this 40yo old house 8 years ago and the basement showed no traces of flooding. Because we're surrounded by maples and oaks, cleaning the gutters has been a high priority issue for me, especially in the fall. Last year I decided to give the latest in 'gutter guard' technology a try and what a lesson I got! We got hit with a 3 inch rainfall that just overran the lip on the guards that's supposed to draw the water in, while allowing leaves to flow over. So basically no gutters. And a resulting flood in the basement!

I know there's a hella rainfall goin' on in the NE right now, but make sure you're shedding the water well away from the foundation.
