From the local newspaper, The Post Star, today:

LAKE GEORGE -- Police say a Warren County sheriff's officer was to blame for a Monday morning crash in which the officer's unmarked patrol car collided with another vehicle on Route 9 while making a U-turn.
Both the police officer, Warren County Sheriff's Patrol Officer Eric J. Mazzeo, and Michael J. King, 57, of Kettle's Way, Queensbury, were treated at Glens Falls Hospital and released after the 11:05 a.m. collision.
Warren County Sheriff Larry Cleveland said Mazzeo, 24, was in an unmarked patrol car headed north on Route 9 between Route 149 and Bloody Pond Road when he pulled to the right shoulder to make a U-turn.
The unmarked car is used for traffic enforcement, and Mazzeo was turning around to go after a southbound car he had spotted speeding, Cleveland said.
He had turned the emergency lights on, but the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu does not have a roof light bar, and King would not likely have known the lights in the back window signified that it was an emergency vehicle, police said.
Mazzeo pulled into the path of King's northbound 1998 Saab sedan, which hit the front passenger side of Mazzeo's car. The collision caused King's vehicle to careen across the southbound lanes into a rock outcropping and flip onto its side, Cleveland said.
Mazzeo suffered a possible concussion; King was unhurt, Cleveland said.
The Sheriff's Department's initial conclusion is that Mazzeo made an unsafe U-turn, and the department is performing an internal investigation to determine whether disciplinary action is warranted.
"He said he didn't see the other vehicle; it must have
been in his blind spot," Cleveland said.
Traffic tickets will not be filed because Mazzeo was performing a police function at the time. Police are absolved from traffic tickets while performing police duties, Cleveland said.
"He's still going to be looking at an internal investigation because it was an unsafe turn," the sheriff said.
Thankfully, the driver of the Saab was unhurt.
