Whether you use the equity in your sedan, take it out of the bank or borrow it you're still spending 18K for the wagon. Depreciation is the big expense when it comes to cars. Your sedan has already done the majority of it's depreciating. I'm guessing it's probably worth 9-10K- less if you trade it in and take wholesale. You could drive the car another 4/5 years and 60,000 miles and still get $3-4k for it if you take care of it. You'd obviously have some repair expenses. The 18K wagon will turn into a an 8k wagon before you make your last payment if you finance it for five years, plus there's interest on that money. If you can't think of anything you'd rather do with 10K and can afford to to toss it like that who am I to tell you not to? But don't try to rationalize that you need a wagon, do it for the real reason, because you WANT to. I mean how many days in the last year did you have your sedan filled to capacity so you couldn't get another thing in? Probably very few. I know I'm a little passionate about this, and it's because of all the years I spent in the car business watching young couples shoot themselves in the foot financially to buy car they really didn't need. I guess you can lead them to water...
