The IIHS gold pick for safety for the 9-3SS should give anybody an excuse to buy a Saab, especially if a spouse is opposed to it. How about the following possible Saab slogans?
1. (current one) Saab - Born from Jets
2. (similar to previous one) People who don't want to die drive Saabs
3. If you don't buy a Saab, you must have a deathwish. (or Buy Saab or Die)
The only other competitors that have a gold pick are the Ford Five Hundred (good if you are senile and a bad driver), Subaru Legacy, and Honda Civic (gold pick but too small for real life safety).
Some cars, like the Audi A4 and Acura TSX are fine cars, except that they are a deathtrap in rear end collisions and have poor seat designs that collapse during rear crashes.
Safety is what led me to buy a 9-3. I've had several Saabs but I was concerned that the 9-3SS was too GM. Then I read the IIHS results and the choice was clear, i.e. I don't want to die, the 9-3 still had quite a bit of Saab-ness, and that I could live with some GM-ness.
