The life of modern oils is too long. Service intervals based on oil changes of modern synthetic oils means a service shop has to send a customer out the door who they won't see for 15k or 2 years, so everything had better be fresh and able to wear that long. That's the jist of the R&T article on "Those Long Oil Changes". You aren't gonna' make the engine last longer with more frequent than 15k synthetic oil change intervals, but a lot can happen in 15k not oil related.
I believe it was for this reason Saab went with a 10k or 1 year interval for service.
