Acutally, you should be able to get tivo to use broadband (DSL or Cable) to do the updates. I have replay TV and it gives you the option to do either. I'm hard wired to my router on one, and use a wireless bridge on the other one. works well.. So I do the vonage thing, and use it for the alarm system. everything is happy...
So I pay for basic cable, use replay TV on the lifetime subscription plan, get cable modem from the cable provider, use vonage for LL service via voip, and we all have cell phones. this ends up being about the least expensive all around, and gets the free phone, cable modem for my home network/vonage/alarm notification/replay tv updates/and I use a linksys WMA11-A too. read up on it, it's really cool!
I guess if the cable modem service goes out I'm without several services, however in the 15 pluss years I've had the cable service, the *only* thing that every went out was the cable modem when "AT home" was in the drivers seat. Since they went away and Cox took over.... 99.9999% uptime.
Also, the state of california did a 911 thing for cell phones so that they know where you are... with three cell phones in the family I think we are covered.
