...did the laws JUST change or something? Last I remember, radar detectors are legal, except in DC and Virginia. (Its NOT a jammer, its a standard detector, and actually quite old and lousy.) I just got a ticket for failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. I also had no front plate (have my 'turbo' SAAB euro plate hehe) and an "illegal" radar detector...but didn't get tickets for them...just for the stop sign.

However, he said that I should just plead guilty and mail it in, otherwise he'll mention the plate and my radar detector in court. Seems like a scare tactic to try and scare me into NOT coming to court...so I bet he actually doesn't want to/won't show up. I'm very surprised the officer wasn't familiar with NYS law. I don't see how having the detector could hurt me in court if I plead not guilty...since its not illegal...just may cause the judge to have no sympathy for me and rule in the officer's favor. But the whole point of going to court is hoping the officer doesn't show, and if he does show, then its no worse than if I pleaded guilty right away, so worth a shot.

To those who like to say "be a man" and buck up and just plead guilty - The system is such that its worth a shot to try and plead not guilty, can't really hurt yourself any worse, and who wants to gain points and pay elevated insurance? Its not about denying an infraction was committed.
