My advice is to completely avoid giving out "stuff". Little things that'll gather dust or get thrown away - shot glasses and the like. Also, home made compilation CDs sound like a neat idea, but in practice they're not really any good. What are the odds that more than 10% of the people at your wedding will actually like the music you put on it?

So, something to eat is a good option. Lindt or Godiva truffles for instance.

My brother had what I thought was a great idea. Instead of spending $5 apiece for 200 different favors, he thought it'd be cool to just get one big item, like a small LCD tv, and do a drawing for it. Sorta rednecky but I think that's a great idea, unfortunately his fiancee didn't so they'll be giving out tchotchkes instead.
