quite trust it to do things right. I add a manual step or two and have has--so far-- reliable results. This won't find your photos but it may help you keep them controlled in the future.
This seems like extra work, but with three other people using our main digicam this works better for me than doing the auto-import function in iPhoto. I get pix from the cam to the PowerBook via a card reader for the SD card. When I open the card I make a folder on the desktop for each set of photos on the card. This can be one big set or several smaller ones. I then copy all the shots on the card to the folder(s) I made.
Then I use the import function to get the pix into iPhoto, one folder at a time. I create a folder with the same name in iPhoto, which now shows up in the Pictures folder on the computer instead of in the year and month folders. I think I could also just move the folder from the desktop to the Pictures folder but I haven't tried that yet.
I may have missed a step, but this seems to work well. I always mean to go in and give pix a logical name instead of the alphanumerical one the cam gives it but don't usually get there.
