They wanted to increase volume and obtain the benefits of being a volume manufacturer while maintaining the exclusivity of being a limited volume maker themselves. They sold Land Rover separately to Ford because it was a valuable, desirable product (and after they had gleaned some 4x4 knowledge from it). They pretty much gave up on Rover Cars, and gave it away to the first willing to accept it gambler they could find, while retaining the new MINI, which they felt they could make money on, and recoup some of the fortune they lost on the whole Rover escapade. In the end, they decided to buy Rolls Royce, and go volume with BMW. I think Ford is a long way off being so hard up that they will try to sell Jaguar or Land Rover. PAG is not Ford's biggest problem - producing cars (other than SUV's) that Americans actually want is. They have done a good job with the Mustang, and I like some of their models, but I think they have really dropped the ball with marketing, especially the Freestyle, Five Hundred and the Fusion. Hard to believe that a company that made the Cortina seem desirable is falling down at marketing, but it is.
