OnStar update and lunch.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Mon, 7 Aug 2006 15:39:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Oh man it was old home week at the OnStar lunch. As Saab is just another GM car at these new meetings I met many of my old Saturn buddies and my old, what am I saying as he looks better than I do, VW salesmanager Rick Rodrigues of De La Fuente Cadillac.
Anyway, here's the news. OnStar is supposed to offer an upgrade for a 1 to 2 year service commitment in Jan of 2007. The rep, Tony DiSalle, said OnStar was leaning towards only a one year commitment for the upgrade. The upgrade is from Gen 5 OnStar which is roughly from 2002 ish and up and that folks with older cars than that would get a coupon or discount voucher towards the purchase of a new car.
Now I need to find out which Saabs had Gen 5 OnStar.
The new wiz bang OnStar feature, "D&C" directions and connections, turn by turn navigation prompts from a computer, will only be availible with Gen 7 OnStar in the 2007 9-7X and the upgraded D&C package will be standard. 2007 9-3 and 9-5 OnStar will continue to be Gen 6 with just the Safety and Security package. Gen 6 has Directions & Connections availible, $399 per year vs $199 for Saftey & Security, but it will be a live operator leading you. Gen 7 D&C is a turn by turn nav system with prompts generated by computer after an initial consultation with an OnStar operartor. Gen 7 will have availible a lower rate per year for D&C, only $299 to pay after the free 1 year subscription runs out. Again only availible on the 2007 9-7X.
The other big OnStar push was to sign people up for email notifications from their car, that is email diagnostics covering current mileage, emmissions and safety systems as well as a report from the oil life monitor. Signing up for OnStar is not enough by itself. You must press the Blue Button and request the free service, free if you're a Gen 6+ OnStar subcriber that is, because of privacy concerns. You must specifically authorize the release of data from your vehicle. Another wrinkle for this notification was the integration of tire pressure monitors, the email notification will tell your individual tire pressure.
Other emailed info includes XM subscriber info, peronal calling minutes availible, recall reminders and the selling dealer information to refer to.
Interesting that some service personel objected to the example of a message of "No maintenance needed" at the 6,500 mile mark with 16% of oil life remaining. Their objection was that the customer need a tire rotation and fluids check more often than an oil change. Hmmmm...
