K&N's were originally designed for dirty racing conditions (e.g. dirt track). When paper filters got full of dirt, they stopped the engine. When the K&N type gets clogged, the engine has enough vacuum to break the oil's grip and suck the dirt in right through those larger holes. So, you get to finish the race, at the expense of some serious engine wear. It's a question of priorities.
Assuming that's true, we'd have to decide if we care. None of the people I know runing K&N's will get their filter dirty enough that this would happen - but I do wonder about whether WOT conditions can pull in dirt with these filters. The BPC problems noted seem to indicate that they do. They definitely allow more dirt in initially before they clog a bit and get efficient.
