If you can target about 3 neighborhoods where you would like to live, then try to identify a GOOD broker who works those neighborhoods. Most people I know have not had good experiences finding apartments using craigs list in NYC. Brooklyn is a lot of fun and cheaper and easier to find a decent place in. I also feel that a lot of the neighborhoods in Brooklyn have a better feel and are less isolating, but that is just my opinion.
Most of my friends who live in Brooklyn and Queens have no problems parking their cars on the street, but it really depends on the neighborhood in Manhattan. If you can afford it and dont want headaches, I would put it in a garage, but it costs. Less conveniently located garages are not too bad. My father keeps his car in a garage on West End Ave in the 60s for around $300 per month plus tax.
Good luck with the search. It is usually frustrating.
