I've been struggling with something involving a free Saab that was given to me and then passed onto a friend, I'll try to explain the situation in the best way possible.
Basically, I was offered a free '86 900S in February by an acquaintance. It needed brake work and other things and had been sitting for some months, I actually picked it up in the nick of time, it was about to be towed the day I brought it to my place. Its out of state registration was current at the time and ran out in June. The owner lost the title but had the registration. I held onto the car for a couple of months, spent about $250 or so fixing some things on it, but I never drove it or put it in my name since I needed to get a replacement title from Illinois first ($50) before I could, I live in Kentucky. Realizing I didn't need another car I ended up passing it on to another friend for free, he bought a rebuilt caliper and brake rotors so we got it so it could stop and drove it and he parked it on the street near his house. The previous owner's registration was still current. I told him I would help him fix the car, he just had to put it in his name and pay for parts.
Fast forward a few months to now. The previous owner's registration expired at the end of June, my friend never got it registered in his name. He's on vacation now, I went by his house the other day to water his plants and now the free Saab has an abandoned car sticker on it and will be towed by the city (if it hasn't been already). I called him up and he said I should try to movie it, I told him I didn't feel comfortable driving around an unregistered/uninsured car that didn't belong to me. We decided maybe it would be best to cut our losses and junk it. I called some junk yards but they wouldn't take it due to a lack of title. Now I have no idea what to do. I'm afraid if it gets towed by the city that the previous owner (guy who gave it to me) will get in trouble somehow or rack up storage fees at the impound lot since the car was last in his name. It's a car that's in rough condition so I'm hoping the city will just junk it. I feel like I'm in a bind and don't know what to do. The main thing I'm concerned about is the guy who gave me the car being fined for having an abandoned car in his name. Would the fact that it is an out-of-state registered car help? Any advice would be appreciated, this is really weighing on me despite the fact that I'm not really tied to the car any longer...
