If your wife's in grad school, look for the academic discount - can be substantial, especially for software. You didn't say what field - that may have a big impact on needs.
I'd bump up the RAM to at least one gig, if not the full 4 GB it can handle.
Biggest risk is the hard drive - but they are pretty cheap and easy to replace. You might want to put the money to a good external drive so she can back up her work -- if it's a thesis or major paper loosing the drive would be distressing to say the least.
The stock 1-year warranty should cover most of the likely problems (bad battery, other components) that would fail and be covered. IF it lasts a year, most of the problems would arise from user error (aka dropping the lap top) and I doubt the warrenty would help - but the backed up drive would be most appreciated
