Digital x rays are just like digital cameras. They are not better, just different. The dentists with digital x ray equipment don't have to buy film. Unlike digital cameras, dentists do not sit around and photoshop x rays like people do with photos. Dentists who buy the digital stuff save the expense of developing, that's all.
The skill of a dentist is extremely important, much more so than occupations which the work is standardized.
Another profession where skill is extremely important is in plastic surgery (which can be reconstructive, not only cosmetic). When having cosmetic surgery, one should always go to the specialist, not just a general plastic surgeon. For example, baggy eyelids people should go to an oculoplastics (ophthalmic plastic surgery) surgeon. Facelifts should be done with someone who had a fellowship in facial plastic surgery. Breast implants and tummy tucks should be done by a general plastic surgeon, not an oculoplastic surgeon or a ENT/facial plastic surgeon. My sister in law went to the wrong type of plastic surgeon. She did not go to an oculoplastic surgeon for her eyelids and did not go to a general plastic surgeon for her boobs.
