There were times when we Aussies felt a little embarrassed by Steve Irwin. Believe me, being regarded as a larrikin isn't one of the reasons. That's a term of endearment here. Irwin was just so full-on all the time and we're a country that cuts down it's tall poppies.
Rest assured though, the tributes are well and truly flowing here for Steve Irwin. He'll likely get a state funeral. We may try to tear a guy like him down a few pegs while he's running hot, but when someone like that dies so senselessly and prematurely everyone's capable of seeing the incredible good he did and the pleasure he brought into people's lives.
There's a lot of grief here for him and care for his family, especially young Bindi and Bob.
