I have had this before in safari and it was a font conflict or a font that hasnt loaded. If it is the default one it may be times that is the problem.
Eitehr dbl check there isn't a conflict or go to safari>preferences and change the standard font to something you know there is loaded. I have mine as Helvetica 11 point.
A good font management tool is Linotype's fontexplorerX that isa free download... I had endless problems with Suitcase (a POS!) in that it wouldn't close if you wanted to restart and hang until you force quit it. FontExplorerX is great tho and really easy to manage fonts. Oh and ditch apple's font book.... very ordinary font management app and so unlike apple to develop something like that!
