this may not work for the wife but new knobs are about $9 at the dealer....
best to reinforce the knob by wrapping wire (copper or steel) around the knob shaft then coating it with epoxy glue.. this keeps the opening in the knob from breaking from excess torque cause by the poor design of the control shaft...
of course the next piece to break is the shaft (which is more $) and about 3-4 hrs to replace...
the only real fix is the later design heater box assy ($200+)
there's is a TSB that explains how to lubricate and rework the existing heater box linkage (which may or may not work short term)
search in the 9-3 forum for more fixes...
