1975(?) Guild arch-back that is one of, if not the best, sounding accoustic I've ever played (a matter of taste for sure).
1970's Honer hollow-body through Roland VGA-5 (a surprisingly decent sounding solid state modeling amp).
I'm not very good, but the way I learned was from a chord book, applying principles from playing trumpet in jazz, marching, and concert bands through highschool. If you don't have any formal musical training in your background it would probably be good to take some lessons to learn the concept of things like octaves, keys, etc.
That said, I've heard some guys play who are amazing guitar players but don't really know anything about music. How you're able to learn will depend upon your ear somewhat. For example my mom is tone deaf to a large extent, she could still learn to play if she wanted-to, but she would need to learn the theory more fully because she could never really play just by ear.
How is your ear? People range from perfect pitch, where someone can say, "sing a middle-C" and the person can reproduce that tone without an external reference point, to being tone deaf and everywhere in between.
