I just finished looking at the 2001 9-3 (78K, 5spd, $7200) and 1999 9-5 wagon (100K, a'matic, $6000) in austin.
The 9-3 the was the car i most looked forward to driving. i came away disappointed. the dealer's lot was junky and the car was unvacuumed/untidy. it took away from the otherwise good shape the car was in. there were little things like the SID not completely working, looked like coolant overflowed in a major way at sometime, the bracket for one of the fog lights was broken (so it sat kinda crooked in the bumper), headlight wiper/washers didn't work, neither did the rear wiper washer, there was a very slight hunt for the reverse gear that was my only major concern. I had previous 900's, where the grind would happen. so i'm not sure if it was because of my not use to shifting these cars in a while. Otherwise the car ran tight. it felt quick and ac was ice cold. i told them i made an appointment for the car to be checked monday.
The 9-5 wagon was at a saab dealer. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!! The experience in very way was opposite. the car was polished/detailed. the car was a traded in last week by the original owner (a woman) for the another saab. the dealership has the complete history of the car. i was told the engine and turbo were replaced in july/august free of charge by saab because of a sludge problem. the new engine and turbo had about 2k miles on it. there were minor things like a headlight failure, SID acting up, headlight wipers not working properly. otherwise everything worked, no rust, no accidents. I told them i'd still like to have the car looked at independently.
Was I foolish to leave a deposit on the 9-5?
thx
